Why Are We Doing What We Are Doing?

Happy fall! Andy and I recently got to visit fall (and good friends) in West Virginia. The trees were glorious, everyone was selling pumpkins, and the smell of hay was marvelous. I miss autumn — we don’t have much “autumn” in Orlando. Do you find peace in autumn? Please email me, I’d love to hear what you love about the seasons.

Andy and I have been with Cru for a LONG time. I am currently serving with Cru’s campus ministry — focused on communication for our staff who serve students and faculty, from high school through graduate school. Why do I do what I am doing? Because people need Jesus, and because I love, love, love what I do! Through my work, I am helping our staff reach students like Dani, our intern last summer from Marquette University. She was so eager to learn our communications strategies and helped us put together a training for our national communicators (a training we will be rolling out the first week of December). I work so Amber from Duke University can give her life fully to Christ at their campus fall retreat; and so Jesús, who is a Venezuelan-born grad student, can attend a Colorado State University Cru meeting; and for each of the 10 young men who went to the North Dakota fall retreat from Moorhead State University — they are why I work, to be sure our campus staff have information that can help them in their work on campus.

Andy regularly encourages his Help Desk teams that we are following God’s call to serve Cru staff so that they can live out their calling. When we enable our staff to introduce people to the gospel and to minister to and disciple them, we feel the joy of knowing we’re doing the work that God has created for us to do!

We Love Doing Ministry With You!

Andy and I love what we do in large part because of you! You are our full-on partner. There have been a number of situations where your prayers have been palpable to us. A good friend shared a story about a conversation he had with another staff member. Our friend is walking through grief after his wife’s 11-year illness and death.

…I had lunch with another missionary here in Orlando who has a ministry support team, similar to mine. He said that he didn’t consider his ministry support team to be his friends and that they only provided financial support for his work. This gave me yet another opportunity to reflect on how amazing YOU are and what a blessing you are to me! I … regard you as my friends. It is unimaginable to me what my grief experience might have been the last few years without your support and prayers. My life is rich because of you!

Andy and I feel the exact same way!!! We could not be about God’s business without your prayers and financial support! Many of you have not only been there for us, but also for our girls. Thank you for enabling us to do what we do, for helping our Cru staff in high schools and colleges get the information they need to have a successful ministry. We thank God for you and your participation each day.

We Love Doing Ministry With Godly Leaders

In October, Steve Douglass, the former president of Cru/Campus Crusade for Christ International, went home to be with Jesus. Andy’s and my heart were simultaneously heavy for his wife, Judy, and his children and grandchildren; but also light, knowing that he had finished his race and finished it so well.

Steve was a true missionary statesman. This was a guy with degrees from MIT and Harvard. While most of his classmates were going to work for Fortune 500 companies, Steve shared over and over how, when he received his MBA from Harvard, the faces of his professors fell when he announced that he would work for a non-profit, Campus Crusade for Christ (now Cru).

Steve loved doing ministry. When our whole headquarters moved to Orlando from Southern California, Steve got involved with students on the campus of University of Central Florida. He worked on a project that helps others learn Bible stories to share with people who don’t have a written language, called the Orality Project. It wasn’t until Andy and I moved into our second house that we saw Steve’s daily project — he walked around our community, on the main road, picking up trash. The president of one of the largest missionary organizations in the world would share the gospel with people while making the streets of our neighborhood clean. It was quite the encouragement for our girls who saw him, over and over, humbling himself and going through a gospel presentation on the side of the road.

Steve’s leadership was a model to many. He sought guidance from the Lord when he took the mantle of leadership from Bill Bright (Cru’s founder), and he led the ministry fueled by a dedication to tell everyone, everywhere, about God’s hope and purpose for their lives. Steve and Judy initiated a regular gathering of the presidents of many Christian organizations (i.e.: YWAM, Pioneers, Wycliffe, Navigators, and others) to work together to reach the world for Christ. One outcome of those meetings? The JESUS Film has just been translated into its 2000th language, the Zo language spoken in India, Myanmar, and Burma. Steve knew that the world would only be reached if we all labored side-by-side.

Why do Andy and I do what we do? So that everyone has an opportunity to hear about Jesus, the gospel of living life forgiven, and eternal life in God. As Steve Douglass would say, “So that everyone has the chance to know someone who truly follows Jesus.”
