Hello from continued quarantine in Central Florida! This is Andy writing this time. I would have never believed, in March, that this would still be going on, and with such gusto. That I would still be working from home. That Zoom meetings would be a daily reality. That for weeks at a time we would have to be separated from family and friends. That I would be so grateful for FaceTime with family!
Our Summer Schedule
I have just finished my final two seminary classes for Cru’s continuing theological education (wahoo!). I have taken two classes every other summer, mostly because the summers we were in Colorado were too hectic to try to fit them in then. This summer Catherine also took two seminary classes. There was a fair bit of pre-class work and I was proud of how she worked through that. She still has requests coming in for home-made masks, is editing various communications for Cru, and has been working on several baby quilts (for friends, not for our girls). Kevin has returned to the office to process mortgages while Cady has only returned to work on Saturdays. She is really enjoying her time with her girls, such that for now she has decided to step down from leading her salon. Zach finished his school year in early June and was able to receive his physical education teaching certificate. Becca and Murphy are still holding down the fort at Kiddie Academy. Murphy just turned 11 months old and has her first teeth. She is almost walking (though a bit wobbly), and loves using her voice.
Lights in a Dark Time
A friend of ours shared a quote in a letter recently, “Our nation is seeking to be free of two diseases, one of the body (COVID) and one of the heart (racial injustice).” It is evident that these two diseases are wreaking havoc on our nation. We are heartbroken and driven to our knees when we experience or read about people not valuing everyone made in the image of God.
Late last month our church, Discovery Church, asked for donations of bags of non-perishable groceries for needy families in Central Florida. They called it the “Discovery 500” (like Daytona 500 but with peanut butter, Cheerios, and perhaps with toilet paper for the finish tape?). They were hoping to collect 500 bags. Catherine got the idea to contact her “mom squad” of friends and ask them to make a contribution — due to their generosity, Catherine and I were able to purchase 20 full bags of a specific list of non-perishable grocery store items. It took many trips to the store because of purchasing restrictions (one package of toilet paper and four cans of tuna per shopping trip). Catherine and I were so blessed as we dropped off the bags at our church’s main campus. Turns out people donated more than 1,100 bags of food! After our church distributed bags to needy families, there were enough left over to share with some churches in the neediest areas of Orlando.
As I mentioned before, Catherine and I each took two classes this summer, all on Zoom, along with many other Cru staff members. Most of those were people whose summer plans were changed when COVID-19 began.
In April, Catherine got the job of helping a staff woman write the curriculum for a brand new class being offered on Spiritual Formations (taking a Sabbath, daily prayer, meditating on Scripture, etc). Catherine thoroughly enjoyed working with the author. It was a big job that had to be done in a small timeframe, both women kicked themselves into high gear! It was really kind of the author to send Catherine a copy of the workbook they put together. And Catherine was mentioned in the acknowledgements!
And, in the spirit of summer, I will share with you our favorite mermaids. Khloe and Rylie got to take swim lessons with their cousin, Kayden:

And Murphy loves to float!

Please email us if we can pray for you—we would love to hear from you! We pray for you often—especially during the current crazy times. We are so very thankful to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with you to spread the Gospel.
